Other settings concern the key encryption method and the key hash update period. 192.168.0.1 is a standard local network IP address, which is used in almost all routers in order to go to the router’s “home page”, where you can set all the necessary settings, including the password.

If a device is assigned a different address, it can be found in the manual, on the device case, on the box, or from your provider.

In the “Network Authentication” column, set the same “WPA2-PSK”;

Due to these circumstances, we decided to cover in our instructions the principle of password protection of a network based on an ASUS router.

To access the device settings, we first need to go to the router's web interface. You can open it by entering a specific IP address in the address bar of your web browser. To find out what this address is, take the router in your hands and turn it upside down - the bottom panel should indicate the IP address for accessing the device’s web interface, as well as the default login and password. The most commonly used ip is 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, and the login and password are admin. If this is your first time logging into settings, these are the values you should use to log in.

If your router has already been configured before, this data may have been subsequently changed, and you will have to find out how to enter the router settings now. If this is not possible, you will have to reset all the parameters of the router and configure it from scratch by picking up a regular pen, pencil, knitting needle, or any object with a fine tip, and holding down the Reset button located on the panels at the back. Sometimes this button is not made in the form of a recess, but in the form of a regular convex control that can be pressed with your finger.

So now essentially how to set a password on a router? After entering the designated IP address, an invitation form appears on the screen where you need to enter authentication data.

When the data is entered, click the “Login” button and log in to the device’s web panel. Now we have access to all the router settings and, of course, we will immediately begin entering a new or replacing the previous password. We remind you once again: this step assumes that your router is fully configured, is working properly and does not require changing any settings. Let's take a look at the Client Status mini-form on the web dashboard home page. It is here that we can specify the network name, security protocol, and, of course, the key, which in other words is called a password.

In the “Authentication Method” field, select the “WPA2-Personal” protocol, since it is most popular among users and is the least vulnerable to hacking. Now, what we actually needed, enter the network access password in the “WPA-PSK Key” field. Come up with a password that includes uppercase and uppercase letters, as well as several numbers. This key is the hardest for an attacker to guess, and, therefore, your network will be the least susceptible to hacking from the outside. When all the data has been entered, click the “Apply” button and reboot the router, not forgetting to first save all the changes made.

How to set a password on a D-Link Wi-Fi router?

In a similar way to the ASUS model, we look at the bottom wall of the D-Link gadget and remember the IP address for logging into the router’s web panel, as well as authentication data.

We enter the desired IP in the address bar of the web navigator (in our case, it is 192.168.0.1) and indicate a known login and password.

In the hierarchical tree of parameters, select the Wi-Fi branch and in it open a node called “Security settings” (in Russian, this node will be called “Security Settings”).

Now about the main thing, how to set a password on a Wi-Fi router. In the first field at the top, “Network authentication” (in other words, “Network authentication”), select the “WPA2-PSK” option among other settings. This parameter is similar to the WPA2-Personal option that we specified for the ASUS router.

The network name can be viewed or changed in the Wi-Fi -> Basic settings branch. The SSID field is responsible for this.

If your firmware version on a D-Link brand router differs from the one presented in our instructions, most likely, the settings menu will have a similar appearance, and you just have to enter the menu item with the same name and there yourself find the parameters responsible for network authentication the network being used.

As you can see, there is also nothing complicated about how to set a password on a D-Link Wi-Fi router. You just need to know the IP address to enter the settings menu, authentication data and the names of the menus containing the items we need. Figuring this out on your own is not difficult. To set a password to enter the settings menu, you must first log in and change the password in the settings. If the router is new, then all the necessary login information is located either under the bottom of the router or in the quick setup instructions.

We need the following data:

Router address. This is a network address, looks like an IP address, or in the form of a domain name. They are absolutely equivalent, you can enter any;
Username (Username, Login);
User password (Password).

The router address is necessary because the configuration is done through the web interface built into the router. That is, the device is connected to a desktop computer via a wired or wireless Wi-Fi connection, any web browser is launched, and the address of the router is written in its address bar. We perform similar actions when going to a website.

Authorization when entering the settings menu

So, we connected to the computer, entered the router address, and pressed the “Enter” key. The router will immediately begin to require authorization.

The manufacturer sets the same username and password for all routers. Traditionally, the name is admin, the password is either admin or 1234. Enter them in the appropriate fields and enter the settings.

If an error is displayed and the login/password is not accepted, then it is likely that they have already been changed earlier. You need to reset your device to factory defaults by pressing and holding the reset button for at least 10 seconds.

Attention! When resetting, not only the username/password will be canceled, but all other settings! The router will turn into a new device, fresh off the manufacturer's assembly line.

Go to the settings again, enter the factory name/password again, and find yourself in the router settings.

Although the menu for each manufacturer is slightly different in appearance, the structure is the same for all - select the settings item, and then configure this section.

We are interested in the password to enter the settings menu; this section is usually located in “Administration”, “System Settings”, etc. Let's look at the example of a TP-Link router.

The first two lines are used to enter the current username/password. Enter “admin” and “admin” there (or what you entered when logging in). Next, in the third line “New User Name” we enter a new user name, in the fourth line “New Password” - a new password, and in the fifth line again a new password, thereby confirming it. Next, click “Save” so that the changes are saved and applied. The router will immediately reboot and prompt you to enter the settings with a new username/password.

That’s it, an attacker will no longer be able to enter the settings using the factory password, which he knows, the router is safe.

Some manufacturers only provide for changing the password, the user name is unchanged, and always “admin”. But you can change your password anytime, anywhere.

Wireless Security

Next, we’ll look at protection from fans of the free Internet. As you know, Wi-Fi is transmitted over the air, and anyone can connect to it, even from the street (if the signal strength is sufficient). We will also set a password for these freeloaders.

Setting up a Wi-Fi password is also done in the settings menu, so the first thing we do is go back to settings.

Let's take the TP-Link router again as an example. Having entered the settings, look for the “Wireless” menu item.

In the drop-down list, select the “Wireless Setting” submenu. The first part of the window is for basic Wi-Fi settings - network name, region, channel and mode. But we are interested in security - it is in the lower half of the screen.

So, check the box next to “Enable Wireless Security”. Next, in the “Security Type” list, select the encryption standard. The most difficult to crack is WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK. Select it from the list.

Next, in the “PSK Password” field, we come up with and enter the same password. There are certain requirements for it - it should not be shorter than eight characters, and consist only of letters of the English alphabet and numbers. For greater reliability, it is better to mix everything, taking into account the case of letters (w and W are different).

Click “Save”.

This manual will describe in detail the process of setting a password for a Wi-Fi wireless network on ASUS wireless routers. The first thing you need to do is go to the Wi-Fi router settings. It will be better if you set the password from a computer that is connected by wire to the device (but it is also possible via Wi-Fi, I will try to take into account and describe possible problems with this option).

Launch your browser and enter 192.168.1.1 in the address bar - this is the standard address for entering the settings of ASUS routers. It is also indicated on the sticker on the back, and there you will also find your username and password for logging in, usually admin and admin in both fields. (If they do not fit, it means you changed them during the initial setup, there are two options - remember or reset the device to its factory state. This is not a password for the wireless network, but a password for administering the Wi-Fi router settings).

Once entered correctly, you will be taken to the settings web interface, which may look like the image above. If you have an ASUS RT-G32, you will most likely see the option on the left; on ASUS RT-N10 and RT-N12 - a dark web interface (although on older firmware there may be the first option). The process of installing protection on a wireless network is no different.

In the web interface of the router settings, select “Wireless Network” from the menu; in fact, all parameters are set here, including the password for the Wi-Fi network. The picture above shows the settings on the new firmware version, below there will be a screenshot with the old configuration web interface.

The SSID item specifies the public name of the wireless network by which you identify your network among all others. Don't use Cyrillic.
The authentication method (Wi-Fi encryption type) is recommended to be set to WPA2-Personal as the most secure.
The WPA pre-shared key is the Wi-Fi password, enter the desired one, containing at least 8 characters, do not use Cyrillic and special characters.

Click "Apply" and wait for the wireless network settings to change.

If you were connected to the router via a wireless connection when making these settings, the connection with it will be disconnected and you may see an error in the browser window. All you need to do is reconnect via Wi-Fi to the ASUS router, but with new parameters.

D-Link routers are very popular among users. Therefore, instructions for setting up, setting a password, solving some problems, etc. are always relevant. Instructions for setting a password for the Wi-Fi network of a D-Link router

In fact, nothing is difficult. First, go to the router settings. It is advisable to connect to the router via cable. But, if this is not possible, then you can use Wi-Fi (if any problems arise after installation, see solutions at the end of this article).

In the settings go to the tab WiFi - Security Settings (if you have an English menu, then change it to Russian). In the drop down menu Network authentication install WPA2-PSK. In field PSK encryption key enter the password that will be used to connect to your Wi-Fi network. On a computer, this is usually a well-known error. "The network settings saved on this computer do not meet the requirements of this network", or "Windows was unable to connect to...". Mobile devices may simply not connect.

On mobile devices, you just need to press on the network, hold it for a while, and select Delete from the menu.
